Kistefos Museum near Oslo
A lot of wood, a lot of water, a slightly sloping terrain perfect for exploiting hydropower as a source of energy - in 1889 this situation provided ideal conditions for founding the Kistefos cellulose factory, around 40 kilometres north of Oslo. The same topographical situation also determined the design by BIG for a new art museum which now, like a kind of "living bridge" with a span of 60 metres, connects the banks of the River Randselva. The large, warped sculpture forms the antithesis to the old industrial buildings somewhat further upstream, which were converted into a museum that was opened to the public in the 1990s. At the same time, the bridge is a valuable addition to the sculpture park that has developed on both riverbanks over the past 15 years and makes it easier for visitors to undertake a complete tour of the site.
